Pea-fect Pairings

16 April, 2020

One of the (many) reasons we love our British frozen peas so much is because they can be added to so many yummy dishes. Over the years, we have discovered many perfect pairings for our delicious peas that can be created using ingredients that can typically be found at the back of your kitchen cupboard –  you can add peas to almost any dish!

We would love to see you guys giving it a go and finding out what tasty combinations you can rustle up from what you find in your cupboards, we thought we would share some of our favourites to give you some ins-pea-ration. First off, lets take a look at the sorts of foods and spices that peas partner well with.

Peas go well with…

Peas are super versatile, but they go particularly well with herbs and spices such as mint, olive oil, thyme, rosemary, dill, curry and black pepper. This makes them perfect in hearty curry dishes as well as lighter summer salads, great for the coming warmer months. We are huge fans of a pea and mint salad, yum!

Our peas love being with their fellow veggies to make for nutrient dense dishes, they especially love being with fruit and vegetables full of strong flavours like asparagus, leek, onion, garlic and lemons as well as protein rich edamame and iron packed kale and spinach (check out our Green Baked Eggs with Peas and Leeks).

To complete your dish, peas pair well with lots of grains that can be found in the store cupboard like polenta, quinoa, pasta and risotto rice! The opportunities are endless.

Some examples of dishes you could make…

Now that we are all experts in the world of food pairing, let’s take a look at some examples of dishes we can make using peas. Your new found flavour pairing knowledge means you can completely tailor the below to suit your tastes and be sure to wow your crowd!

Pea Pasta

A classic, so simple yet so tasty. We love adding peas into our pasta dishes they pretty much go well in every single dish! Pesto, puttanesca, carbonara, you name it, peas are all over it. We have a delicious recipe for Pea Pasta Dough with a Creamy Pea, Mushrooms and Sausage Sauce here.

Pea Paella

Paella is surprisingly easy to make using a variety of store cupboard essentials, remember that risotto rice we mentioned before, it’s time for it to shine! You can throw in some frozen fish alongside peas to make for a flavour packed, low cost dish! If you don’t fancy fish, try chicken, chorizo or keep it vegetarian and load it up with vegetables.

Peas-on-Toast

Yes, you read that correctly, move over avocado – peas on toast is one of our favourites! Try them mashed on toast with a drizzle of olive oil along with some salt and pepper to taste. You can switch it up by adding chilli flakes or paprika from your cupboards. Quick, easy and healthy.
