Returning for its seventh year, the 4th-10th of July marked Great British Pea Week, celebrating our love for the versatile vegetable and all of its hard-working farmers who bring them to our plates!
Great British Pea Week was launched by the team at Yes Peas! to recognise the industry-wide effort made by experts across the pea vining sector during their busiest period, who work hard to produce 2 billion portions of peas for the UK market. During the eight-week harvest, the industry works in unison to harvest around the clock, shell and transport the peas from field to frozen as quickly as possible – with many making it to the factory and through the freezing process in under two and a half hours!
To celebrate the occasion, we hosted our very own Pick Your Own Peas event, opening up one of our pea fields just outside of Boston in Lincolnshire exclusively for the first time ever. Lucky members of the public were invited pick their very own peas, straight from the vine!
We hosted a competition to search for some of the UK’s biggest pea lovers and we were flooded with entries from the public declaring their loved for the treasured veggie. Five lucky winners were invited to come and join us in the fields to pick, pod and pack their own peas to take away and enjoy at home.
We were also joined by local primary school children from Boston West Academy who got to learn more about the humble pea and were provided with recipe cards to inspire them to get creative in the kitchen with their family!
